Aims
English has a central role in the delivery of a liberal education. It transcends the bounds of a curricular subject and extends into all areas of human consciousness and culture. It is concerned with both the individual and society. Through the medium of language it seeks to foster self awareness and personal growth and to develop the creative power of imagination. It encourages an awareness and appreciation of our literary and cultural history and seeks to generate the necessary linguistic skills for individuals to play a positive and discriminating role in society.
Curriculum
At Key Stage 3 students experience a wide range of literary texts and are encouraged to develop the skills of the autonomous reader. The curriculum enables them to develop skills in Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing.
In Year 12 all students follow CCEA GCSE courses in English and Literature. In Years 13 and 14 students follow AQA’s English Literature Specification A.
Facilities & Resources
The Department has a range of relevant resources to help facilitate teaching, including access to the computer suite, audio visual equipment and a range of text books and departmentally produced materials.
Achievements and Successes
The English Department has a long and rich history of fostering a love of literature and language in generations of students. It continues to be one of the school’s most popular choices at A Level. The English Department has also been particularly innovative and imaginative in its promotion of creativity across the curriculum.
In recent years its students have achieved top places in external examinations, both in Northern Ireland and the UK as a whole.
