Aims

The Art and Design Department of Down High School offers a broad and stimulating programme of study developed within an exciting and creative working environment.
While our main aim is to foster a sense of enjoyment, enrichment and fulfilment for all pupils from years 8 to 14, we also encourage our students to pursue art and design as a possible career choice

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage Three programme of study includes not only painting and drawing but explores work in a variety of media, including ceramics, ICT Photoshop, printing, stitch and collage. The pupils are encouraged to have fun, to explore, to problem solve, to discuss, to work with others and to investigate the work of other artists and designers. A number of museum and gallery visits are incorporated into the key stage three programme of study.

GCSE, AS and A2

At senior level the pupils are introduced to a broader range of processes, media and materials, including a variety of printing processes, textile work, digital photography and computer aided design. The students are encouraged to engage in personal research, both analytical and contextual. Regular visits to art galleries, museums and artists’ studios are incorporated into the programme of study.
