Hot on the heels of Andrew Graham’s brilliant achievement as a champion sprinter, Down High Athletics has continued to make great strides in recent times and the girls’ teams have led the way with stunning performances at both county, Ulster and all-Ireland levels. Amy Geddes, Caroline Craig, Anisa Dagher, Aine McCann, Catherine Martin, Lucy Geddes and Tara McClay all achieved individual success at both District and Ulster levels.

Pride of place in Athletics goes to the Cross-Country girls, with Megan Wilson and Christine McCullough being particularly proficient at Intermediate Level. It was in the junior category that Down High has truly excelled in recent times, winning the District Com petition comfortably and, after a nail-biting competition, long jumpemerging victorious as the 2008 Ulster Junior Champions. This follows previous success as Ulster Minor Champions in 2006. As if this was not sufficient, the girls went on to take a superb 4th place in the all-Ireland competition. The winning team consisted of Aine McCann, Elaine Burch, Lucy Geddes, Tara McClay, Allen Martin and Claire Cunningham. This is a group that can go on to achieve legendary status in the annals of Down High School sport. Miss Heaney’s coaching and organisational skills have contributed greatly to the girls’ success and it is hoped that the progress will continue.
