The School Today

Down High School (a day school) is a controlled co-educational Grammar School incorporating a Preparatory Department. The school is run by a Board of Governors, responsible to the South Eastern Education and Library Board for the organisation of the school, the appointment of staff and the welfare of the pupils.

School numbers have risen substantially over recent years. Currently the school has 940 pupils in the Senior School and 150 in the Preparatory Department. In the Sixth Form, 264 students are engaged in Advanced Level study.
The situation of the school is convenient to many town and country bus routes. Besides the usual classrooms, the building comprises specialist rooms for practical subjects (Art, Science, Technology, Home Economics), a Music Department, a newly equipped Drama studio, Careers Suite, Library, Audio-Visual Aids Recording Room, Assembly Hall, Dining Hall and Sixth Form Common Room.

Facilities for outdoor sporting activities are catered for by the school’s own playing fields. Additional recreational facilities are available in the Down Leisure Centre.

Built in 1997, the Fowweather Building provides excellent facilities for Science and Technology. The school now benefits from the building of a new library, a gymnasium, changing accommodation and extra teaching space. A modern ICT suite heralded a new era for the school, enabling pupils across all subject areas to avail of the opportunities afforded by modern technologies.
