For pRIMARY PUPILS

NATASHA LITTLE

That was it! I'd stepped onto the bus and there was no going back. I was off to High School, Down High School!

Anybody who knows me would describe me as shy and quiet and I don't mind that. It's how I'd describe myself too. My blazer was huge and my tie was longer than a bus! I had so many questions buzzing round my head. Will I get lost? Will I get bullied? Will I be able to handle buses? My worries were endless. It wasn't all bad though. I was also starting my new school along with two of my friends from primary school. One of them was my best mate and this made me feel better.

For the first day I stuck with the people I knew, but a few days later I knew everyone in my class really well. We were all friends. Nobody found anything hard or difficult and we all enjoyed the subjects. In year 8 we study all the usual subjects: English, Maths, History, Drama and RS (Religious Studies). But there was one subject that was new to us; Learning for Life and Work (LLW). In LLW we learn all about citizenship, our skills and qualities and the effects of drugs-things like that. We have a brilliant teacher for this class, Mr. Gunson!! All the P7s coming next year should look out for Mr G! He's a wonderful teacher!

In DHS the boys do rugby and the girls do hockey. There's hockey club after school on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. I don't know about rugby though! For one term in year 8 we all do swimming and then for the other terms girls do netball and gymnastics but again, I don't know what the boys do.

There are lots of clubs to go to as well; Chemistry club, Young Farmers, junior debating society, choir and lots more. Trust me, no matter what kind of personality you have there is bound to be a club to suit you!!!

We have several outings in Year 8 but the most important one is the Cultra Residential. As I said before I'm shy so I was nervous about the trip. I didn't feel I knew the people in my class well enough to spend a couple of nights with them!!! It actually turned out to be really good fun. We had one pretty spectacular talent show, a barn dance and a Victorian day.

There was also the most fabulous old fashioned sweet shop with all the big jars behind the counter and pots of humbugs and gobstoppers.
